What a joy to have such great partners...
Te Mooi Speckle Park in partnership with Parkvale, Hanging Rock, Blueridge, Aleon, Lagoon and Glengarry Speckle Park cooperated to acquire the outstanding herd sire prospect Maungahina Nightlight. And he is truly something special.
First and foremost he is a tremendous individual, structurally sound, a fluent mover with length, strength and capacity.

At 18 months Maungahina Nightlight had a 40cm scrotal measurement, he is out of one of the premier females in the powerfull Maungahina herd, and by the exciting Maungahina Legacy, who is already forging a formidable reputation in the breed. Maungahina Nightlight's EBV profile is something to behold. Not only is he in the top 1% of the breed for 200, 400 and 600-day weights and retail beef yield, but he is also the number-one bull in the breed for Carcase Weight and Eye Muscle Area. Furthermore he is in the top 10% of the breed for shorter gestation length.
I am a very big fan of contemporary group comparison, as it removes environmental factors as an influence. Looking at the bulls on offer at Maungahina is revealing. Firstly, Maungahina is a tremendous program with 110 years of seed stock production experience, and they have built an extraordinary genetic base. Their 2017 crop is only surpassed in size by Minnamurra Speckle Park and Wattle Grove, and that is across the globe. In the immortal words of the great Sinatra, if you can make it there, you really CAN “make it anywhere”.
Nightlight stands out anywhere.

Among the sale bulls, Nightlight had the best average daily weight gain, he has the largest EMA, and is third in the group for IMF%. He was 0.6 kilograms heavier than average at birth, at weaning he was 10% heavier than the average and he was 12% (78 kilograms) heavier at 18 months of age. His EMA scan was 16% (113 sqcm) higher than the average, and his IMF% was 6.3% compared with the contemporary group average of 4.7%. Nightlight looks to have all the right stuff.
On the pedigree front he has all that we look for. Maungahina principal, Mark McKenzie, believes Nightlight’s sire, Maungahina Legacy, is the best bull they have bread to date, and his dam, SPKNZ H22, is one of Maungahina’s elite donor dams. Her dam, SPKNZ E39, is a full sister to the highly regarded SPKNZ Extreme being out of the great Codiak Nice Lady 25N. SPKNZ H22 is the fourth consecutive generation of female selected as an ET donor. She consistently produces outstanding quality.
Great bulls come from great female families, and that is most certainly the case here. Let's not forget that this is the family that gave us the Australian record-priced bull, Minnamurra Leander L81, who’s progeny are turning heads across the country. Maungahina Nightlight looks certain to make a similar impact.
